Successful participation of Babcock Noell in the modernization of German nuclear power plants

Würzburg, 10 December 2010

The Würzburg-based Babcock Noell GmbH received the order from e.on Kernkraft GmbH, Hanover, to design and deliver three compact storage racks for fuel elements for the nuclear power station ISAR 2. The compact storage racks are equipped with special neutron absorbers.

With 1485 MW, the ISAR 2 nuclear power plant is the the most productive and, alongside the nuclear power plants Emsland and  Neckarwestheim 2, the most modern German reactor. Extending the storage capacity increases the operational flexibility of the power plant.

Fuel element storage racks are used in particular for temporarily storing spent fuel elements underwater in the plant before reloading them in transport containers and transporting them to the on-site interim storage after a decay time.

Compact storage racks differ from conventional storage racks offering a  better use of space by storing the individual spent fuel elemente closer together. In order to realize the narrower spacing, the fuel elements in the storage racks are encapsulated in rectangular tubes made of special steel with very high boron content. Processing this kind of steel requires high manufacturing expertise, especially in terms of welding technology.

Babcock Noell has a long tradition of producing storage racks and compact storage racks, supplying the compact storage racks as early as in the 1960s. Subsequently, more than 10 nuclear power plants have been equipped.
With the present order, Babcock Noell continues this tradition with state-of-the-art technology.
