Research Reactor Salaspils, Lettland

Salaspils Nuclear Research Centre is about 25 km from the Latvian capital of Riga. The pool reactor operated there with a thermal capacity of 5 MW started operation in September 1961. With the approval of the Latvian Cabinet in May 1995, a start was made on the preparations for final shutdown and decommissioning.

The basis for further decisions on decommissioning was a decommissioning strategy worked out by Babcock Noell Nuclear that was prepared in 1998/99. As a special feature in this case the Latvian experts responsible for decommissioning were closely involved in the elaboration of the study. With this `training on the job` they were familiarized with the western procedures for decommissioning and enabled to carry out the further decommissioning independently.
