JRC fuel element transfer
From the beginning of the 1960s, tests were carried out at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in Ispra on radiation-exposed nuclear fuels.
After the termination of the tests in the 1980s, the fuel elements were left behind in Ispra. The range extends from intact fuel rods and experimental fuel
elements as well as fragments of them.
Babcock Noell Nuclear worked out a conception, for conditioning the fuel and for loading it into transfer and final storage vessels. Following the concept, the fuel elements or fragments shall be packed suitable for final storage in the existing hot cells.
Necessary provision of new and adaption of available equipment was described and the sequence of work, the budget and schedule for fuel disposal were evaluated.
